4C Weekly Update November 29th

Highlights:
  • We had a wonderful evening on Thursday with the unveiling of our school mural and our giving projects. Thank you for your support in donating so much to these projects. Here is a link to the news clip about the mural and the artist. https://calgary.ctvnews.ca/mobile/video?clipId=1843551 
  • Students learned the standard algorithm for multiplication this week. Please continue to practice basic facts so that these more complex concepts become less difficult for them
  • Grade 4 classes continued learning about simple machines. On Monday and Tuesday this week students learned about a new simple machine from a different teacher than they are used to.  Ask your child which one they learned about and who taught them.
  • The Division 2 play has been ramping up practices and rehearsals this week. On Friday we went through a practice for the finally. Ask your child what their role is.

Reminders:
  • With the cold weather this week we have been having indoor recesses. If the temperature rises above -20 including windchill students are expected to be outside. Please send your child ready to be outside with a winter coat, mittens/gloves and a warm hat.
  • 4C has homework in math due on Monday. 
  • The Show Must Go On is being presented on Wednesday Dec 11th and Thursday December 12th, Cast A is on Dec 11th and Cast B is on Dec 12th. Doors open at 6:15 on both evenings.

4C Weekly Update November 22nd

Highlights:

  • It was great to see so many families come that Student led conferences! Thank you for making the time to join us.
  • We are almost finished our novel, Bridge to Terabithia. We will watch the movie next week to compare it to the book. 
  • We are continuing to work on writing effective paragraphs that include a topic sentences, relevant details and closing statements.
  • This week each Grade 4 class learned about a specific simple machine. Our student teachers from U of C and U of L are going to be teaching each grade 4 class about each of the following simple machines. Ask your child which one they learned about this week.
    • Gears

    • Wheels and axles

Reminders:

  • Calgary Food Bank
    • From now until December 17th we will be collecting non-perishable food for the Calgary Food Bank. Foodbank boxes are now placed around the school to accept any and all donations.
  • November 28th at 6:30pm-8:00 pm, our school will be hosting a Night of Gathering and Giving for our communities.  This evening event will consist of an official unveiling of a mural painted in our school by Ryan Jason Allen Willert. As well as performances by Jess McMann doing a Pow Wow Mash-up.  A component of the evening will consist of parents and students working at various stations throughout the school.  The stations will consist of helping the food bank pack birthday packages, designing hamper boxes, creating kindness rocks, designing placemats for Veterans and making cards for those in need who use Meals on Wheels. 
  • If you would like to donate to this night, below is a list of donations we are looking for.  Please only send NEW, UNUSED items:

4C Weekly Update November 15th

Highlights

  • We created a video sharing all the French we’ve learned so far! We are excited to share them at student-led conferences.
  • After learning about First Nations petroglyphs, we created our own pictographs that tell a story of a past memory.
  • We completed patterns using addition, subtraction, multiplication to complete a t-table.
  • We started some new winter art projects using oil pastels and paint.
  • Please continue to practice multiplication facts with your children. When students memorize those facts it helps them in their math work.

On Thursday, November 28 at 6:30 pm, In lieu of a Christmas concert, we will be hosting an evening of Gathering and Giving for our SVS community.  The gathering will start with a 30 minute Pow Wow mash-up led by Jess who taught students how to hoop dance last year. Following Jess's presentation, Ryan and his elder will be blessing the mural.
The giving portion of the evening will follow the gathering.  Student leaders and teachers will take a lead at different stations of giving around the school. Families can circulate and participate in any station they are interested in. Please watch your email inbox for an invite to RSVP.

  • Birthday Bags for the Food Bank: There are 100 kids a month who are able to have a birthday party because of this program.  We are asking various businesses in the community as well as parents (before the event) for donations of all the supplies you need to host a birthday party.  At this station, we will assemble the bags and make birthday cards.

  • Cards for Meals on Wheels: Meals on Wheels provides healthy meals to people who are unable to cook for themselves, whether it is an injury, illness, disability, the loss of a loved one, or other circumstances. The meals are delivered daily.  At this station, we will create birthday or Christmas cards to be included with the meal to brighten someone's day.
  • Food Donations for the Food Bank: We will have 8 Food Hampers around the school to collect donations.  At this station, families can donate food and design the collection boxes.
  • SVS Rocks Kindness: At this station, people can create kindness rocks to be shared with the community. Anyone can paint a rock and drop it off somewhere in the community for someone else to find. A piece of paper could accompany it saying, "This is a kindness rock.  Do a random act of kindness and then pass the rock on".
  • SVS Hampers: Every year, the staff creates hampers for families at our school who need a helping hand at Christmas.  At this station, we will decorate the Christmas boxes we will be giving out to those families.

4C Weekly Update November 8th

Highlights
  • We had a great field trip to Heritage Park this week! Students experienced life as it would have been in a 1910 schoolhouse. They also learned about Henry Ford and his innovation to the assembly line process. Ask your child to explain how they built the trucks on the assembly line.
  • Please continue to work on basic facts, especially multiplication. We will be moving into multiplication of larger numbers and having a solid foundation of the basic facts will better enable your child to successfully complete these more complex questions.

4C Weekly Update November 1st

Highlights

  • In math we have been working on patterning and applying mental mathematics strategies to determine basic multiplication facts to 9 × 9. Please review multiplication facts with your child at home. 
  • We have begun expository writing in Language Arts. After choosing their topic students picked three main ideas and expanded each idea with details. We will continue to focus on this type of writing to organize ideas into paragraphs. 
  • All classes are continuing with French instruction. Ask your child how to say their birthday in French.
  • Ryan Willert has been working at our school painting a mural in our Gathering Space.  The following link is a quick video of his artistic process. https://youtu.be/MF9vXDn_MDk

We are only half way done and we are really looking forward to unveiling the whole mural at the end of November.
